Blue duck – Hymenolaimus malacorhynchos

Other names: Whio, Mountain duck, Blue mountain duck

The Blue Duck or Whio is an iconic species of clear fast-flowing rivers, now mostly confined to high altitude segments of rivers in North and South Island mountain regions. Nowhere common, it lives at low densities and its shrill “whio” whistle above the noise of turbulent waters will usher in a long-remembered encounter.

Blue Duck (Male) - Turangi, NZ

Blue Duck (Male) – Turangi, NZ

Here’s a quick explanation and map of were I found my Blue duck near Turangi near Lake Taupo, Being there is only about 1000 pairs left in the world and how fussy they are with water quality there getting very hard too find.

From Turangi drive south about 5km to a sign that says Red Hut Bridge, From here follow the track around to the left from here see the map below.

I visited the site 3 times and finally found a pair at about 7am.
